Howard Elliott, Deer Lodge dies; last rites Thursday
DEER LODGE — Services for Howard E. Elliott, 76, retired Deer Lodge school administrator and optometrist, will be Thursday at 2 in the Beck Funeral Home in Deer Lodge with the Rev. I. M. Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. He was a second lieutenant in the Army during World War I.
A native of Bear, Idaho, Mr. Elliott was born July 21, 1891, and attended schools there and at Council, Idaho. He graduated from Weiser, Idaho, High School and studied at the University of Idaho at Moscow and Western Montana College, Dillon. In 1924 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Montana in Missoula.
He had been a school teacher and administrator in Wisdom, Geraldine, Florence-Carlton, Mountain Home, Idaho, and Three Forks. Mr. Elliott was superintendent of Powell County High School, Deer Lodge, from 1938-46. He then attended a school of optometry in Los Angeles and practiced as an optometrist in Deer Lodge from 1948-56, when he retired. He was a member of the American Legion, Montana Education Association, and Deer Lodge Kiwanis.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; sons Paul R. of Lodi, Calif., and William of Whitefish; and seven grandchildren.
