ONTARIO, Ore. — Rosary, for Jed Shane, 72, Ontario, who died Sunday in an Ontario hospital, will be recited at 7 p.m. today in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Ontario. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Revs. Brian McGovern of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, John Baumgartner of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Vale, Ore., and Cletus Kirkpatrick, chaplain of Holy Rosary Hospital, Ontario. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery, Ontario, under the direction of Lienkaemper Chapel, Ontario.
He was born July 1, 1908, in DeLamar. He was educated in Boise. He attended the College of Idaho for two years. He married Louise Newman on March 29, 1933, in Nampa. He moved to Ontario in 1935 and was an appliance manager for C.C. Anderson Co. In 1940, he started Shane Variety Stores in Ontario, Weiser, Fruitland, and Emmett. He was also a toy manufacturer in Ontario in 1940. He established a Dodge dealership in Ontario in 1960. He retired in 1972. He helped establish the port of entry while he was president of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.
He worked with the Red Cross. He played with the Jerry and the Pirates band for more than 35 years. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Ontario City Council, Ontario orchestra, Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Grange, National Association of Variety Store Managers, Elks Lodge No. 1690 and Knights of Columbus. He was past chairman of the Malheur County Fair Board, charter president of the Ontario Lions Club, district chairman for the Boy Scouts of America, and past president of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and the Musicians’ Union.
Survivors include his wife of Ontario; two sons, Con H. of Tuscarora, Nev., and Dan of Ontario; a daughter, Patty Kruck of Ontario; a sister, Mary Hartz of Boise; and 12 grandchildren.
