ICE BLAMED FOR FATAL ACCIDENT
– Superintendent of Adams County Schools Dies After Car Crash
FRUITLAND, Idaho, Dec. 29
Icy pavements were blamed today for an automobile accident that claimed the life of Mrs. Lulu McMahan, 54, of New Meadows, Adams county superintendent of public instruction.
She was the wife of Edward McMahan, for many years a rancher in the Meadows valley region, who was injured in the accident.
Mrs. McMahan died at an Ontario, Ore., hospital a short time after the accident, which occurred on a highway curve near here.
State Patrolman Jones L. Brown of Payette said the car, driven by the dead woman’s son, Eugene McMahan, skidded on the icy pavement and crashed into a light truck driven by Albert Alder, 29, of Weiser.
Mrs. McMahan’s husband, their daughter, Mrs. Mary Dunham, 30, and the son, also suffered head injuries. Another passenger, Mrs. Charles Schuler, 62, received cuts about the face and was taken to the Ontario hospital for treatment.
Mrs. McMahan was just completing service of her first term as Adams county school superintendent and was reelected at the November 8 general election.
She had lived near New Meadows for many years and had taught school there.
