Carolyn (Hopkins) Miller, 96, of 1415 W. Fort St., Boise, widow of U.S. Sen. Bert H. Miller and a former Democratic National Committeewoman, died on Thursday, Feb. 23, 1984, at home of natural causes. ock, Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Gibson Funeral Home with Rev. Elvin R. Gallagher of All Saints Episcopal Church officiating.
Mrs. Miller was born on Aug. 10, 1887, at Lorain, Ohio, to Francis T. and Josephine Hopkins. She moved as a small child with her family to Weiser. Following graduation from Weiser High School, she attended business college in Seattle. Upon completion, she worked as an abstractor in Vale, Ore., Boise and Rexburg until she married Mr. Miller in 1916 at Missoula, Mont. They made their home in Rexburg and Idaho Falls until moving to Boise in 1933 when Mr. Miller was elected to his first term as attorney general.
Always active in politics with her husband, Mrs. Miller resumed her involvement in Idaho Democratic activities following his death in 1949. She was elected national committee woman in 1958 and was a delegate to the 1960 Democratic Convention in Los Angeles, where Sen. Frank Church was keynote speaker and John F. Kennedy won the presidential nomination.
She was active in numerous civic organizations, including more than 50 years as a member of the Tuesday Musicale. She was also a member of the Mayflower Society; the DAR; the Idaho Historical Society: and maintained her membership in the Senate Ladies of Washington, D.C.
She was preceded in death by a sister Anna Blanch Hopkins.
She is survived by a son, Lee F. Miller of Boise; a daughter, Mrs. James H. Hawley, Jr., of Boise; six grandsons, Lee F. Miller, Jr., of Seattle, Michael D. Miller of Bellevue, Wash., and James H. Hawley III, Christopher S. Hawley, David J. Miller and Bert H. Miller, all of Boise; and by seven great-grandchildren.
