Emily (Coulter) Mowrey
WEISER Emily Coulter Mowrey, 76, of Weiser, died Friday, April 22, 1988, in a Cambridge shelter home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Weiser. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weiser. Arrangements are under the direction of Thomason Funeral Home, Weiser.
Mrs. Mowrey was born March 31, 1912, at Weiser, a daughter of Edwin and Lucy Coulter of Weiser. She graduated from Weiser High School and from the music conservatory of Whitman College, Walla Walla, Wash. She taught school in Sunnyside, Wash., then worked for Seattle’s Alaska Steamship Line, playing piano on the cruise ships going up the inside passage to Juneau, Alaska. It a was on one of these ships that she met her husband, Irvin Mowrey, an engineer in the Merchant Marine. They were married in 1943 at Seattle. She was a high school English and music teacher, following her husband who worked for the Forest Service, in his career throughout most of Idaho and Arizona, even living on lookouts for several summers. Mr. Mowrey retired in 1975, and they moved back to Weiser where she taught piano.
Mrs. Mowrey was a wonderful pianist and musician, playing jazz and classical music in particular. She lived her life with enthusiasm, originality and humor. Survivors include a daughter, Liz Mowrey of Weiser; two sons, Irv Mowrey of Fresno, Calif., and Edwin C. Mowrey of Edmonds, Wash.; a sister, Elizabeth Coulter of Weiser; a granddaughter, Anna Slade of Weiser; a niece, Susan Haroian of Edmonds; and a grandniece, Brenda, and a grandnephew, John. Her husband died in 1980.
Friends may call Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12:30p.m. at the Thomason Funeral Home in Weiser.
