Van Hyde Moser

Obituary

Class of 1960
Aug. 19, 1942 – Feb. 18, 2017
Van Hyde Moser, 74, of Middleton, passed away Saturday evening after a yearlong battle with lung cancer, February 18, 2017, at his home surrounded by several family members. In his last moments here on earth, he listened to the final seconds of his granddaughter, Rilee, playing for the State Championship Basketball game. Aware of her team winning, he said, “That’s really great!”, and then soon after passed away. He had a deep and abiding love for each member of his family and loved to share in their experiences as this example exemplifies.
Van was born August 19, 1942, at his family residence, in Auburn, Wyoming. Van was 5 years old when his family moved to Weiser, Idaho in April of 1947 to a ranch on the Weiser Flat. Not too long afterwards, they moved to a ranch by the old iron bridge just outside of Weiser. Growing up there, his parents instilled in him an appreciation for hard work that stayed with him throughout his life. Van graduated from Weiser High School in 1960.
He then moved to Pocatello, Idaho in the fall of that same year. Van served for six years with the Army Reserve. While living in Pocatello, he met and married Shirley Kelly, to whom he celebrated his 50th Wedding Anniversary this past April 30, 2016. In Pocatello he attended college at ISU where he graduated with a degree in Business/Administration. During his studies at ISU, he started his career with the Mountain Bell phone company. Van worked there for 46 years with the last 35 years as a design engineer. In 1977 when he was 35 years old, Van moved his family to Middleton, Idaho where he resided on Hartley Lane until 2012. With hard work and endless hours of personal labor through those years, he created a refuge for his family. It was more of a hobby than a chore. It was a great love of his to be outside and to be working with his hands. He enjoyed raising several farm animals, gardening, burning the ditches that surrounded his property, pruning his fruit trees, flood irrigating his yard, driving his riding lawnmower with a grandchild on his lap, Friday nights that he and his wife played cards with friends, and sitting out under his honey locust shade trees drinking his Dr. Pepper, eating sunflower seeds and talking politics.
Other experiences he savored were always with his wife Shirley whether it be to their annual family reunions camping on the shores of Cascade Lake, vacations taken to several places in the world, trips to the Oregon coast to fish with his son and their family, and attending Middleton High School athletics of which he was an avid supporter, being recognized several days before he died, at the first State Girls Basketball game receiving the sportsmanship award. He found the greatest joy and satisfaction with his family and his love for the restored gospel, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With a sure testimony of this knowledge, he sealed his family for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple on May 14, 1983. Van served in many callings in the church, including a Boise Temple ordinance worker and as a Bishop of the Middleton 3rd Ward. Van Hyde Moser will leave with all a void that cannot be replaced as a Husband, Father, Grand Father, Great Grand Father, Brother, Uncle, friend and mentor. He will be dearly missed but his influence will be felt often and for that his family will be forever grateful.
Van was preceded in death by his parents Evan Otto & Theo (Hyde) Moser, three brothers: Boyd H. (Dee) Moser, Darwin Hyde Moser and Lael Evan Moser, one sister Freda & Ed (Moser) Lewis and Reggie Moser (infant grandson).
He is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Debbie (Andy) Bibb, and two sons Scott (Holly) Moser and Michael (Teemaree) Moser, 12 grandchildren: Luke, Emily (Brady), Hillary, Jake (Elizabeth), Stephanie, Ridge, Brooke, Ashlee (Travis), Rilee, Maggie, Kade and Cicily, 3 great-grandchildren: Bella, Reed and Brielle and one new baby boy due in June. He is also survived by his sister Connie (Burnell) Lee, and sisters-in-law, Carolyn Moser and Karen Moser.
A viewing will be held Friday, February 24, 2017 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell, Idaho. Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 23644 Old Hwy 30, Caldwell on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. The family will greet friends from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. Interment will take place at the Middleton Cemetery, Middleton, ID directly after the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Special thanks to Flahiff Funeral Chapel of Caldwell for considerations and care.
