Grace (Maxwell) Gray
WALNUT CREEK – A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Piedmont Community Church for Grace (Maxwell) Gray, a resident of the Bay Area since 1929, who died Saturday at her home in Rossmoor at age 88.
She and her husband, the late John C. Gray, lived in Oakland and Piedmont until his death in 1968. She moved to Rossmoor two years later.
Mrs. Gray was a founding member of Chapter IC of the P.Ε.Ο. Sisterhood in Oakland in 1935 and was active in it for nearly 50 years. She was president of the Women’s Guild of Piedmont Community Church, and a member of Pine Branch of the Children’s Hospital of the East Bay, the Oakland Women’s Athletic Club, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, and Projects Limited at Rossmoor.
She was a native of Oakland, Iowa, and earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Oregon State College in 1921. She taught at King City High School before marrying John Gray, who was also a graduate of Oregon State.
He worked for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company in Portland, Ore., Seattle, Wash., and in San Francisco where he was assistant vice president.
Mrs. Gray is survived by a son, William A. Gray of Lafayette, and a daughter, Marcia Gray Doty of Stockton, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
