Mary “Inez” (Barton) Smith, 97, of Weiser, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 1994, in a Weiser Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Thomason Funeral Chapel, Weiser. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weiser.
Inez was born Nov. 5, 1896, at Weiser, and virtually lived all of her life in Weiser. She was a daughter of Sen. E. M. and Carrie Grubb Barton. Inez and her sister Kay were members of the first women’s bowling team in Weiser. She was also active in the Professional Women’s Association and the Washington County Senior Citizens Association.
In addition to working at the family-owned Weiser Hotel and operating a restaurant in New Meadows, as well as the restaurant in the Weiser Hotel, Inez worked for D. L. Carter, Chamberlin Garage and Ore-Ida as a bookkeeper.
She played the organ and directed the choir at St. Agnes Catholic Church for many years.
Survivors include two grandsons, Michael Kidd of Denver, Colo., and Douglas Kidd and his wife, Debbie of Fairfax, Va; a niece, Mary Louise Barton Johnson Sargent of Weiser; second cousins, Rita Blevins of Weiser and Elizabeth Yaden of Klamath Falls, Ore.; a cousin-in-law, Fran Barton of Boise; two nieces-in-law, Arlene Barton of Boise and Jackie Barton Shaul of Meridian; a cousin, Bruce Barton of Austin, Texas; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Edwin Marion and Edward Conrad “Connie” Barton; a sister, Katherin “Kay” Barton Lansbury; a daughter, Carol Brockman Kidd, and granddaughter, Carolyn Brockman Fitton, both of Fairfax, Va.
The family suggests that memorials may be made in her name to St. Agnes Catholic Church, 214 E. Liberty, Weiser 83672; or to Washington County Senior Citizens, 115 E. Idaho, Weiser 83672.
Friends may call Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomason Funeral Chapel in Weiser.
