Lon S. Dunn
Longtime radio personality Lon Dunn, age 81, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2022. Lon was the eldest son of Seth and Radah (Matthews) Dunn. Born on April 15, 1941, in Twin Falls, ID, his family eventually moved to Weiser, ID, where he attended school and graduated. Lon had many achievements in broadcasting, beginning with his first job at KBOL, where his humorous style made him a beloved figure in the community.
Lon’s radio career took him to various places, including The Dalles, OR, and Boise, ID. In Boise, he worked for KIDO radio and was part of the popular “Live Five” morning show. His distinctive voice and engaging personality earned him a loyal following. Lon also worked at KWET in Everett, Washington, where he broadcasted from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm for 11 years.
In 1976, he moved to KBOT, where he served as Program Director and hosted the popular morning show with Paul J. Schneider. One of his most notable interviews was with President Richard Nixon in 1972 after Watergate. Lon’s contributions to the radio industry were recognized when he was named Entertainer of the Year by the Idaho State Broadcasters Association.
Beyond his radio career, Lon was deeply involved in his community. He was honored as a Distinguished Citizen by the Idaho Statesman and was known for organizing programs for seniors, such as “Rake up Boise.” He had a lifelong passion for woodworking and enjoyed sharing his creations with family and friends.
Lon is survived by his son Brian Dunn, daughter Lori Dunn-Keller (Glen), son Matt Dunn (Amanda), and grandchildren Amy Cutler (Camden), Austin Amato, and Rian Dunn. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren: Skyler, Channing, Scanlon, and Hawk, as well as his brothers Dennis Dunn and Brent Dunn (Sue). Lon was preceded in death by his parents.
Per Lon’s request, there will be no memorial service, and he will be cremated. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a favorite charity.
Lon Dunn will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by those who knew him. His legacy in broadcasting and community service leaves a lasting impact.
From Lorri Dunn-Keller
