Improvements at Weiser (1887)

(Note: this article was published just 3 years before the disastrous 1890 fire that destroyed 2 full blocks of town.)
IMPROVEMENTS AT WEISER
The Town Shows Many Evidences of Progress and Promises More
Since the location of the depot at Weiser, considerable improvement in the way of building has been made, and this season promises such a boom in the way of building as the town has never before enjoyed. Perrault, Watlington & Co. have built a large frame store room 380×100 feet, 12 feet high, on Commercial Street, and they have moved their stock of hardware from Main Street to the new building.
Alongside of Perrault, Watlington & Co., and connecting with their store, the Weiser Bank, of which Mr. Watlington is cashier, has erected a commodious building to transact their business, and have put in a large time lock, fire, and burglar-proof safe. The bank is doing a fair business.
G.R. Weatherford, proprietor of the Weiser Hotel, has erected a large addition to his hotel, with twenty rooms capacity, and has furnished the same with new and handsome furniture. The Weiser Hotel is the popular stopping place in that town, and “Bob” leaves no means unused to care for the comfort of his guests.
The ground floor of the new addition is occupied by the store of E.C. Helfrich & Co., general merchandise, and they are doing a good business. This store is one of many Mr. H. is interested in along the O.S.L.
The Sommer Brothers have bought out Bamberger & Frank, general merchandise, and A. Sears has bought out A.L. Simondi, furniture, and both are doing a fair business.
Other new buildings have been erected on Main Street, and a number of dwellings have recently been finished and others are in the course of erection on the side and back streets. Altogether, the town has a prosperous and general go-ahead look.
C.W. Townley supplies the community with fresh meats at reasonable rates, notwithstanding an enemy wrote to several papers that Weiser had no butcher and needed one.
