Charles (Charley) Townley, Sr.

In 1882, Charles “Charley” Townley, Sr. and Marinda “Minnie” Townley and their five children boarded a train in Austin, Nevada and headed to the Willamette Valley in Western Oregon. When they arrived in Baker City, Oregon, they were told that there was no good land left in the Willamette Valley. They changed their destination and settled in Weiser. Charley worked as a farmer and conducted a meat market.
I don’t know when Charley became the proprietor of the hotel, but shortly after, musical instruments were acquired for the children to play to entertain the hotel guests. Our family still has the piano, flute, clarinet, and violin. 1890 was a terrible year. The youngest child, four-year-old Bertha, died from diphtheria on April 18th. Her mother followed on April 27th. In May, the Weiser City Hotel burned down and several other businesses burned as well. Charley and Marinda are pictured below.
