Edward A. Van Sicklin

Obituary

May 16, 1861 – Feb. 14, 1934
Edward A. Van Sicklin, 72, Was Stockman and Former Gubernatorial Candidate
Boise, Feb. 16. (AP)—Edward A. Van Sicklin, 72, prominent stockman and one-time Democratic candidate for governor of Idaho, died in Baker, Ore., last week.
For the past 12 years, Van Sicklin lived in Portland, Ore., where he moved from Weiser. Born May 16, 1861, in Ontario Province, Canada, Van Sicklin came west to Baker, Ore., 48 years ago and soon moved to Idaho. At Weiser, he built up a large sheep operation and later extended his activities into the Lemhi country, managing the Idaho Livestock Company with headquarters in Salmon City.
State Senator
He was prominent in politics, serving several years as state senator from Washington County prior to his nomination for governor in 1918. He was also a director for several years of the First National Bank of Idaho in Boise.
Van Sicklin was visiting friends in Baker when he retired to his hotel room for a rest and died, evidently in his sleep.
Surviving are his wife and two daughters, Nina and Grace, of Portland; a third daughter, Mrs. Robert McAfee of Boise; and one son, Arthur Van Sicklin, of Weiser.
Funeral arrangements have not been made.

MAYOR VAN SICKLIN SWORN IN
Tuesday evening, E.A. Van Sicklin was sworn in as mayor of the city of Weiser for the next year. In an election of more than ordinary interest, Mr. Van Sicklin was chosen to the mayoralty by a 148 majority. During his residence in this city, he has made many friends who did what they could to ensure his election, and now they have every reason to hope for a successful administration of the city’s affairs at his hands. In another column is published his inaugural message, in which in plain terms he calls attention to some items of interest to the taxpayers of the city. One thing is sure, the new mayor is taking the reins of government from good hands, and it is no doubt his intention to do as well or better than his predecessor.
Mr. Van Sicklin was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1860. He came west to California in 1876. In 1884, he arrived in Baker City, Oregon, on the first through passenger train to run over the OR & N Railroad (Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company). Five years later, in 1889, he located in Washington County, Idaho, at Mineral. The new mayor came to Weiser in 1900 and, in numerous ways, has identified himself with the business and social activities of the city. He early engaged in the stock business and has been very successful, being today one of the prosperous and well-to-do men of the city and county.
Mr. Van Sicklin is married, has children, and lives in a beautiful home.
