James R. “Jim” Johnston passed away on January 22, 2013. He was born on November 11, 1936 to Wallace and Gladys Johnston in Boise, Idaho.
Jim attended school in Boise, Midvale and graduated from Weiser High School in 1955. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in Korea in 1957 and 1958. After returning to Weiser, he went back to work at the Weiser Flour Mill.
On October 31, 1959, Jim and Bonnie Ball were married in Weiser. In 1960, they welcomed twins Ron and Rhonda, and this was a new experience for all.
In 1961, Jim went to work for the Washington County Road and Bridge until 1963 when he became a Washington County Deputy, that same year, He ran for sheriff and won the primary beginning his long career in law enforcement.
During his thirty plus years in law enforcement, he and Bonnie also had a small ranch on the Weiser Flat raising Register Hereford cattle. He always said his four legged animals were his therapy.
Jim always expressed that due to his time in office it didn’t leave a lot of time with his family, but he made up for it with his grandkids and great grandkids. He loved to show them special things and loved to tease them all.
Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bonnie, his son, Ron and Julie and grandkids Shawnell and Brandy Johnston of Boise, daughter Rhonda and grandkids Hailie Ashley and Justin Rollins of Weiser. He Is also survived by three great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.
Jim was preceded in death by his folks, a sister Juanita as well as many Aunts and Uncles.
A Celebration of Jim’s life will be held on April 27, 2013 at the Weiser Vendome between 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a potluck luncheon at noon. Bring your favorite dish and most important your favorite story. This will be a casual event (he wasn’t much of a suit and tie kind of man.)
