First Citizen of 1960 Dies In Local Hospital
Dr. Leo Sherman Lucas, orthopedic surgeon who was Portland’s First Citizen of 1960, died early Saturday in a local hospital.
Dr. Lucas was a hospital surgeon for 38 years and associate of Lucas, Chuinard, Begg, Noall & Campbell. He was chief surgeon at the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children for 18 years.
He was born Sept. 19, 1894, at Asotin, Wash. He was graduated from Weiser High School at Idaho and Pacific University at Forest Grove. He received his medical degrees in 1923 from University of Oregon.
Dr. Lucas interned at St. Vincent Hospital and then became the first resident surgeon at the Shriners Hospital. He has attended more than 6,000 boys and girls who have been operated on by the Shriners Hospital’s surgeons and more than 3,000 outpatients.
He became a member of the University of Oregon’s Medical School in 1926 and served the school as a senior consultant.
Dr. Lucas was a member of the following professional organizations: Alpha Omega Alpha, American Orthopedic Association, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, American Medical Association and Oregon State and Multnomah county Medical Societies; American College of Surgery, Pacific Coast Surgical Society, North Pacific Orthopedic Society, Western Orthopedic Association, University of Oregon Medical School Alumni Association, Portland Academy of Medicine; Pan Pacific Surgical Society and International Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology.
He also was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and Arlington, Multnomah, Rotary and Waverley Country Clubs.
Dr. Lucas served as a signal corpsman during World War I from 1917 until 1919. He also was a longtime trustee of Pacific University.
Dr. Lucas resided at 705 NW Albemarle Terr. He is survived by the widow, Dorris; three daughters, and nine grandchildren.
Funeral for Dr. Lucas will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church. Vault entombment will be in Riverview Cemetery Maulsoleum.
