Early Sunday Weiser Fire Destroys Parsons Plant
WEISERThe Parsons Onion Packing Shed was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning in the west end of the city. Despite the efforts of the Weiser Volunteer Fire Department, which braved 25-below zero weather, the building could not be saved. The loss has been estimated at $100,000 by Herbert Haun, the company foreman.
The fire, which consumed around 5,000 sacks of quality onions, also destroyed several trucks and four tractors. The Weiser Volunteer Fire Department faced significant challenges; the pumping system of their fire truck froze, and hoses had to be connected to a hydrant that failed to provide adequate pressure. Fire Captain Ross Linderman speculated that an oil stove in the building exploded, igniting the blaze which then spread to nearby fuel oil.
The firefighters battled the inferno for three and a half hours before bringing it under control.
