Seth Dunn: A Man of Many Roles
During his time in Weiser, Seth Dunn earned various titles – from the “garbage and sewer mayor” to a guiding force for the National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest, and above all, a friend to many.
Moving to Weiser in 1950, Mr. Dunn served as Mayor from 1978 to 1981. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in establishing the city’s sewer and garbage systems. However, long before his mayoral days, Mr. Dunn was well-known in Weiser, having spent 23 years as the owner and operator of Home Dairies.
Despite his busy schedule, Mr. Dunn remained active in community affairs, participating in organizations like the PTA and Cub Scouts. Although urged to run for the School Board multiple times, he declined, feeling he couldn’t devote enough time to the role.
Outside of work, Mr. Dunn’s passion for music led him to get involved with the fiddle contest in 1954. Thanks to his efforts and others in the Chamber of Commerce, the contest evolved into the national music event it is today.
After retiring from dairy farming, Mr. Dunn became a self-employed painting contractor, allowing him to engage more in politics. He served a four-year term on the City Council before moving on to the mayor’s office. As mayor, he contributed to the development of Weiser’s administrative system and oversaw the construction of the city’s modern sewer plant.
Even in his leisure, Mr. Dunn was committed to community service. Whether it was cleaning up Mortimer’s Island, conversing with a fishing pole, or traveling with his wife, he remained dedicated to making Weiser a better place.
