SNAKE RIVER BRIDGE – building the steel bridge (1904)

The steel for the Snake River Bridge will reach Weiser within the next 30 days. It will be shipped from Minneapolis next week.
This is taken as an indication that work will be resumed shortly on the structure.

Snake River Bridge – Oregon side on left
The Snake River Bridge – George M. Bacon, the contractor on the Snake river bridge, arrived in the city yesterday morning from Salt Lake. Mr. Bacon came to look over the ground and to prepare to begin construction work, but found the river much higher than expected at this time of year. Special material for the coffer dams has been ordered from the east and is expected to arrive in a week or ten days when he hopes to begin active operations, as the river is failing very fast. He hopes to be able to again secure his former crew in Weiser.

The Snake River Bridge – Contractor George Bacon has begun construction work on the Snake River Bridge with a crew of 11 men. They are now engaged in building scows to be used in putting in the big coffer dams.
Forces will probably be increased soon and the bridge will be completed as rapidly as possible. As all material is now about on the ground, there will be no delays on that account.

Snake River Bridge Construction Progress
Contractor Bacon is advancing the work on the Snake River Bridge with as much speed as possible. Three of the bridge’s piers are already completed: one at each end of the bridge and one of the river piers. The workers are currently finishing the fourth pier, with two more piers still to be constructed.
At the construction site, the river is about nine feet deep, which is approximately a foot lower than it was a year ago. The workmen, using steel caissons, are able to place the concrete for the large piers directly onto the bedrock without difficulty. These caissons are driven down and locked together, and with some caulking, they are made nearly watertight, allowing the work to proceed smoothly.

First to Cross Snake River Bridge
Raymond O’Toole has the distinction of being the first person to drive across the newly completed Snake River Bridge. He was ready early Monday morning with a load of posts for Jim Haworth and crossed as soon as the bridge was cleared of obstructions.
Mr. L.W. Smith, from Mosquite, was the first man to drive across from the other side. Mr. Smith had heard that he had been elected state senator from Washington County and came over to verify the news.

TO IMPROVE BIG BRIDGE
Counties on Both Sides of Snake Collaborate to Help Pay the Bill for Snake River Bridge Improvements
WEISER, Sept. 20.—In a meeting held yesterday, the board of commissioners from Malheur County, Oregon, awarded a contract to the Coast Bridge Company of Portland. The contract involves adding a 140-foot span to the Snake River Bridge.
Additionally, two concrete piers with cement wings will be constructed on either side of the Oregon approach to safeguard the embankments against high water. Other improvements are also planned for the bridge, with the goal of completing the work before the onset of stormy weather.
