Vernol L. “Smitty” Smith, 75, of Odessa, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, at Medical Center Hospital.
Smitty was born on June 3, 1922, in Weiser, Idaho. He graduated from the University of Washington and served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring with the rank of major in 1963. After his military service, he worked as a group leader for Square D Manufacturing in Denver, Colorado. On Nov. 24, 1976, he married Glynna Copeland in Denver, and they later moved to Odessa in 1986. Smitty was a member of the Lutheran church.
He is survived by his wife, Glynna of Odessa; daughters, Charlene Blue of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Catherine Bruce of Boise, Idaho; Theresa Buckley of Cheyenne, Wyo.; Sandra Kinnebrew of Littleton, Colo.; JoAnne Suggs of Boise, Idaho; and son, Robert Smith of Denver. He is also survived by stepdaughters, Karen Sue Frasier of Austin; Kathy Lou Stokes and Karla Kay McIntosh, both of Odessa; brothers, Robert Smith of Boise, Idaho, and Roger Smith of Bend, Ore.; along with 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors, officiated by the Rev. James Otterness. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 811 Central, Odessa, Texas, 79761.
