Allen Rapin – Weiser News Company

Weiser News Company, aka The News Stand, sold books, magazines, office supplies, cigars, gifts, and wallets. I bought a blue wallet there when I was in 8th grade and I still have it.

– First Owned by Allen Rapin, who opened the new business in a small store attached to the Northwest Side of the Hotel Weiser Building and facing State Street (kitty corner from the Vendome Hotel.)
– Then Frank Mortimer became a partner, and in 1916 G.L Atkinson purchased Allen P. Rapin’s interest.
– Woodson Jeffries bought the interest of G.L. Atkinson in 1919, and then sold it to June Wild in 1920, with Gene Hetrick purchasing it in 1940.
– The store eventually took over the whole storefront on Commercial Street.
Gene Hetrick moved the store to a new location in the Odd Fellows Building on State & Idaho Streets in the early 1960’s (
former Metropole location.)
– Purchased out of Bankruptcy by Anna and Clarence Stark in 1980.
– The name was changed to Stark’s Eclectic Gifts.

– Favorite Nickname was Weiser Newsstand

The Samborn Company made insurance maps for many towns every few years. Weiser maps for 1908 and 1914 showed the newsstand attached to the Hotel Weiser which was on the corner of State & Commercial Streets, kitty corner from the Vendome Hotel.

*** G. L. Atkinson of Delta, Colo, arrived with his family this week and will make his home in Weiser. He will be associated with Frank Mortimer in the Weiser News Company, having purchased the interest of A.P. Rapin.
