Northeast Weiser Area Rural Schools
I attended one of the other rural grade schools – Jefferson – not shown on the map because it was located on the Oregon side of the Snake River, 3 miles South of Weiser.
All through those early school years, 1951-59, I never heard of or realized that there were other rural schools in the Weiser area other than Annex Grade School.
Since Annex was also located on the Oregon side, but next to the Snake River, we drove right by it every time we went into Weiser, so it was burned into my brain.

I have written about my Jefferson Grade School experiences, which by today’s standards would be considered primitive.
On March 22, 2022, the Weiser Signal American wrote “Imagine going from a classroom with two to seven other kids and suddenly walking into a high school with around 500 students, a maze of classrooms, and dozens of teachers.
It’s a whole new world for a wide-eyed freshman from a tiny rural community and the experience can be difficult, if not overwhelming.”
If anyone else attended a Weiser school, please submit your story to the Weiser Area Memories Facebook group for the enjoyment of all.

AMONG SCHOOLS OF WASHINGTON COUNTY
LETTER FROM THE COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT WHO IS MAKING A TOUR OF THE COUNTY
The first School of the county visited by the county superintendent this year was the little school of about twenty children at Mineral. The school house has been repaired throughout, walls papered and painted and with a good attendance and Walter Mann as teacher, Mineral has one of the best schools it has ever had.
School District 28 at Crystal last spring moved their school house to a more central position. They have bought some new furniture and have an imposing flag staff and new flag. The trustees heard of Klee Lillie Vissar as an excellent teacher, and early last June engaged her services for the year, offering a salary of $50 per month for nine months. They expect always to hire the best teachers and pay the price. The people each year vote a special tax as a matter of course.
The trustees at Sunnyside have the same spirit of progress. Their school house is one of the best equipped in the county and this year they made special efforts to secure a teacher who would instruct in music. Miss Wickham is doing excellent work in both music and drawing. The school yard is in great need of a fence. The location is most favorable for a lawn of grass and trees.
The school house at Eaton Station was this summer supplied with a new dictionary and teacher’s chair, which completed the equipment. The attendance been so great a number of new seats were necessary. This is partly due to the spirit in which the trustees have taken hold of the compulsory attendance laws. In all cases of failure to comply with the law, fines will be promptly imposed. The children declare that the teacher, Mr. Sutcliffe, has eyes in the back of his head and can see through the walls. The school has one of the strongest 7th grades in the county.
Miss Bertha Wood is teaching one of the ward schools of District 22. Though this is her first school, she conducts it like one of experience. She has the rare power of intensely interesting her pupils in their work. The school house is unfortunately located on a hill.
Miss Cicily Honan, of Boise, is teaching a good school at the Hemenway School house. Some of Washington County’s most substantial citizens received their early training here, but the house Is now very dingy and old. A new coat of paint would improve it immensely. On warm autumn days the house is infested with wasps, to the discomfort of pupils and teacher.
The school at the Haas school house was taught for two months by Chas. Hite, but on account of ill health, he gave it up and it is now in the hands of Miss Clara Watson.
All of these schools have been supplied with large two-volume dictionaries.
The Hale School District No 11 is taught by Mr. Lansdon and has one of the best schools it has ever had. Mr. Lansdon is an excellent disciplinarian and is especially proud of the beginners. The school house is sadly in need of a coat of paint and other repairs.
In the primary department of the Weiser schools, with Miss Lee, one may find a school which will rank among the best of our state. Lee’s intense interest and energy permeate the entire school, and with the competent assistance of Miss Hart, the eighty little people are kept busy as bees. The Batavia plan is ideal.
